FPIES Triggers & Causes

What Foods Commonly Trigger FPIES?

Like many food allergies and related disorders, doctors aren’t sure of the exact cause of FPIES. Researchers are working to learn more about this condition. FPIES often shows up in babies after their first formulas or solid foods are introduced. A baby with FPIES may successfully take breastmilk, then develop FPIES symptoms when a cow milk or soy-based infant formula is started. Very rarely, FPIES has occurred in exclusively breastfed babies. FPIES is a non-IgE mediated immune reaction in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies involved in other food allergy reactions are not involved in an FPIES reaction.

MULTIPLE FOOD ALLERGIES ARE POSSIBLE WITH FPIES

MULTIPLE FOOD ALLERGIES ARE POSSIBLE WITH FPIES

Many children with FPIES are allergic to a single food. Others are allergic to multiple foods. Interestingly, ANY food can be an FPIES trigger. Some foods that aren’t seen as likely allergens are common food triggers for FPIES patients, like rice and oats. Certain fruits and vegetables, like avocado and sweet potato, are also trigger foods for some FPIES patients.
