Eosinophilic Esophagitis

What Is EoE?

Eosinophilic esophagitis, or EoE, is a condition typically caused by food allergies. Allergens like the proteins in cow milk and wheat may be the culprits. EoE is sometimes called an eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorder (EGID). Eosinophilic esophagitis causes inflammation of the esophagus, the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. This is due to a build-up of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell. Symptoms can be painful and may include trouble swallowing, nausea, regurgitation, heartburn, belly or chest pain, and weight loss. Read on to learn more about EoE and how Neocate can help.

WHAT IS AN EOSINOPHIL?

Eosinophils are a kind of white blood cell. Normally, they help fight infections from bacteria and parasites. They are also involved in inflammation and allergic reactions.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY EoE?

WHO IS AFFECTED BY EoE?

Eosinophilic esophagitis is more common in boys: close to three out of every four children with EoE are male. This condition can be diagnosed at any age (adults can have food allergies and related conditions as well).

WILL MY CHILD OUTGROW EoE?

WILL MY CHILD OUTGROW EoE?

Probably not. Unlike other food allergies, EoE is considered a chronic condition, meaning it will never fully go away once a person develops it.

HOW RARE IS EOSINOPHILIC ESOPHAGITIS AND WHAT ARE OTHER, RELATED DISORDERS?

HOW RARE IS EOSINOPHILIC ESOPHAGITIS AND WHAT ARE OTHER, RELATED DISORDERS?

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is not as common as some other allergic disorders. Recent estimates are that it affects about five or six of every 10,000 people in the U.S. The exact number is hard to know, and this could be on the low end because awareness and recognition of EoE are increasing.

In eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs), inflammation due to food allergies happens in the digestive system. Eosinophilic gastritis affects the stomach, and Eosinophilic gastroenteritis affects the stomach and small intestine. In eosinophilic colitis, inflammation due to food allergies happens in the colon (large intestine).

Advocacy Groups

Advocacy Groups

American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED)
A nonprofit organization dedicated to patients and their families coping with eosinophilic disorders, including EoE.
APFED strives to expand education, create awareness, and support research while promoting advocacy among its
members.

Campaign Urging Research for Eosinophilic Diseases (CURED)
A not-for-profit foundation dedicated to those suffering from eosinophilic enteropathy, which includes eosinophilic
esophagitis, eosinophilic gastroenteritis, eosinophilic colitis, and other eosinophilic disorders.

Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE)
A nonprofit organization formed in 2012 through a merger of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) and the
Food Allergy Initiative (FAI). FARE works on behalf of the 15 million Americans with food allergies, including all those at
risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Feeding Tube Awareness Foundation and The Oley Foundation
It's not unusual for people with EoE to have feeding tubes. These are two great resources for "tubies."

Kids With Food Allergies
Offers daily assistance and practical food allergy management help. It has a large online peer support group focused on
children’s food allergies — a good place for giving and getting help with food ideas, recipes, and cooking challenges.
