Neocate Infant DHA/ARA Now Kosher

Posted 6.24.14 | Rob McCandlish, RDN

For years families and clergy within the Jewish faith have contacted us with questions about whether or not Neocate products are kosher. We are happy to report that Neocate Infant DHA/ARA is now certified Kosher Pareve Non-Passover.

Kosher
The term kosher indicates that a food is in accordance with Jewish dietary law, or the laws of kashrut. “Kashrut” refers the body of Jewish law that deals with which foods may or may not be consumed and how those foods are prepared and eaten. You can read more about kosher and Jewish dietary laws here.

KLBD and Neocate Infant
To obtain kosher certification we had an outside organization, the Kashrut Division of the London Beth Din (KLBD), assess Neocate Infant DHA/ARA. KLBD Kosher Certification is a leading global kosher certification agency that has been operating across six continents for more than a century. Their rabbis, food technologists and food chemists work as certification partners, along with representatives and agents in 60 countries worldwide. KLBD reviewed the ingredients in Neocate Infant DHA/ARA and our suppliers and sent an expert to inspect the entire manufacturing process in the United Kingdom, and gave their approval that Neocate Infant DHA/ARA is kosher. Cans of Neocate Infant DHA/ARA with the KLBD logo, certifying the product is kosher, have been available since early June.

To be a bit more specific, Neocate Infant DHA/ARA is certified Kosher Pareve non-Passover. “Pareve” means there is nothing derived from milk or meat used in the product or on the manufacturing equipment. Neocate Infant DHA/ARA is NOT manufactured on shared equipment; in fact it is the only amino acid-based infant formula in North America that’s made in a 100% dairy-free facility. Families that keep kosher can serve Neocate Infant DHA/ARA to their children regardless of whether they are having a dairy or meat meal.

(Neocate Infant DHA/ARA has not been certified as acceptable for use during the Passover holiday, so it is non-Passover.  It is not unusual for a kosher food item to not have Kosher for Passover certification as well; many Kosher items are non-Passover.)

Other Neocate Products
At this time we have not received kosher certification for any other Neocate products. The other Neocate powdered products are all made with similar ingredients from the same suppliers and in the same facility, but we have not sought certification for them at this time.

We know that some of our customers will be happy to see the KLBD logo on Neocate Infant DHA/ARA. Are you one of those customers, and how important is this to you?

    Hi M. Weber,
We’re so glad to hear this positive feedback! It’s great to know that this helps provide comfort to our customers who keep kosher.
      Warm regards,
    Rob

Is the grape flavored also kosher?

    Good question Mark,

At this time we have not sought kosher certification for any of our other Neocate products. We will continue to evaluate this decision, especially as we receive questions from our customers about the kosher status of other Neocate products. Many of the ingredients across the Neocate line are from the same sources and/or suppliers, and none are derived from milk, dairy, or meat, if that helps.

The Kashrut Division of the London Beth Din, which is the organization that certifies Neocate Infant DHA/ARA as Kosher Pareve, informally recognizes some other Neocate products as kosher (but these are not official certifications). You can search KLBD’s online database at http://www.kosher.org.uk/klbd-koshersearch for “Neocate” and/or “028”. The term “Parev” appears next to products that the KLBD has not certified as kosher, but which it informally recognizes as such. Neocate Active and Neocate Advance are similar to Neocate Junior, and Neocate Spoon is the same as Neocate Nutra. Elemental 028 liquid is similar to E028 Splash and Neocate Splash, Unflavored.

If you are interested in using one of our other Neocate products and are concerned about the kosher status, you can share the information above with your Rabbi.

    Hope this helps,
    Rob

At this point, did you get any kosher certification for Neocate Junior?

  • 2015-11-05 | Nutrition Specialist

    Hi Rachel,
At this time, Neocate Infant DHA/ARA is still the only Neocate product in the US that has Kosher Pareve certification. We’ll certainly keep our customers posted if this changes!
      Best,
    Rob

My doctor recommended Neocate for my newborn due to intolerance for other formulas. I was concerned about the kosher status, and am very pleased to learn that the product is kosher certified.
    Thanks

I would love to see Neocate Jr (the toddler formula) certified since it is more complicated to give that without certification. Right now we only have one option for peptide formulas but I wish I had more options to try on my VERY picky son.

Thank you for your consideration of our community.

Thanks very much for letting us know, Nechama! We’ll definitely pass this along to the Neocate team so that they understand how helpful this would be.
      Kind regards,
    Rob

My baby was refusing many formulas and was not gaining weight - no allergies but a very sensitive stomach. Neocate Infant formula was a life saver.
I would love to see the Splash box drinks kosher certified as well since my one year old baby prefers drinking from a straw as opposed to a bottle.

Thanks Rivkah! We’re so happy to hear that your little one did well on Neocate Infant DHA/ARA. We get lots of feedback about Splash, but yours could be the first request to have it certified kosher! We’ll certainly pass this to the Neocate team so that they know how this would help you.
      Kind regards,
    Rob
