Cow milk protein allergy and lactose intolerance are not the same. Cow milk protein allergy is caused by the immune system reacting to the protein found in cow milk and other dairy products. Lactose intolerance is rare in babies, and is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme lactase—which is not the same issue as cow milk protein allergy.
Cow milk protein allergy (CMPA), also known as cow milk allergy (CMA), is one of the most common food allergies in babies, and usually appears before 1 year of age. CMPA usually appears in infancy while lactose intolerance typically starts after the age of three.
