Rare Disease Day, February 28, 2011

Posted 2.1.11 | Mallory West

The European Rare Disease Organization (EURORDIS) established the first Rare Disease Day in 2008. Then, in 2009, EURORDIS asked the US-based National Organization for Rare Disease (NORD) to join the initiative and sponsor Rare Disease Day in the United States.

February 28, 2011 will mark the fourth Annual Rare Disease Day and there will be over 46 different countries participating! The goal is to raise awareness about rare diseases and the many challenges encountered by those affected.

This day is special for us at Nutricia because so many of our families are touched by rare disease. You are probably aware that we make medical foods for infants and children with food allergies and gastrointestinal conditions, but you might be surprised to know that we also make products for people with metabolic disorders, such as Phenylketonuria (PKU) and neurological conditions, like intractable epilepsy.

Our GI/Allergy Division (Neocate) makes medical foods for infants and children with food allergies, gastrointestinal disorders and various types of allergic diseases. There are several rare diseases that fall under this category, such as Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) and other types of eosinophilic conditions.

Our Metabolic Division makes medical foods for infants, children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism. Inborn errors of metabolism, also known as metabolic disorders, are rare genetic disorders in which the body cannot properly turn food into energy. People with these conditions must remain on a special, protein-restricted diet for their entire lives.

Lastly, our Neurology Division makes a formula called KetoCal, which is used by patients on a Ketogenic Diet (KD). The KD is a strict, high fat and very low carbohydrate diet that is used to manage intractable epilepsy, a form of epilepsy that cannot be controlled with anti-epileptic medications. Certain rare seizure disorders, such as Dravet Syndrome, are difficult to control with medication but often respond well to the KD. In addition to patients with epilepsy, the KD is also used by patients with rare metabolic disorders in which the body is unable to process carbohydrates for energy, such as Glut1 Deficiency and Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency.

In honor of Rare Disease Day, Nutricia would like to recognize our families that are coping with rare diseases, which may include:

This year, families are encouraged to share their story via video! For more information or to get involved on Rare Disease Day, visit http://rarediseaseday.us/.

Rare Disease Day is extra special to me because my younger sister, Caroline, has a rare condition called Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood. Is your child affected by a rare condition? Tell us your story!

Reminder for Our Neocate One+ Customers

Posted 1.13.11 | Sarah O'Brien

As a reminder for all of our customers who are currently on Neocate One+, we would like to inform you that Nutricia North America has discontinued Neocate One+. Although patients may still find Neocate One+ in circulation, Nutricia’s inventory is being totally depleted.

We encourage our Neocate One+ users to transition to Neocate Junior or Neocate Junior with Prebiotics. Neocate Junior provides the same if not better nutritional support than Neocate One+, including higher vitamins and minerals. Neocate Junior also meets nutrient requirements at a lower volume and is more cost efficient.

As always, be sure to consult with your physician before switching formulas. If you have further questions or need assistance with transitioning, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-365-7354, Mon.-Fri., 8:30 am - 5:00 pm EST and ask to speak with our nutrition specialists.

Posted 12.22.09 | Nutrition Specialist

In light of parent concerns about Bisphenol A (BPA) in infant formula packaging, Nutricia announced that we’re taking the extra step to protect your little ones by packaging our powdered products in cans with BPA-free lining.

Nutricia has provided a complete list of BPA-Free powdered Neocate products that will come in the new cans.

Our hope is that this change will help provide extra peace of mind to the many families with children with milk allergies and other gastrointestinal, metabolic and neurological conditions that require specialized nutrition. If you have any other questions about the new BPA-free lining, give us a call or ask us in the comments section.

Nutricia: What Makes Us Special?

Posted 10.13.11 | Rob McCandlish, RD

Nutricia LogoAbout a year ago, I started working at Nutricia in my role as a Nutrition Specialist. I knew from the beginning that I’d found a great place to work, and it is hard to believe how fast that first year has gone by. What is it they say about time flying?

Well, we hear from so many parents how helpful our products are, especially Neocate, and I thought it would be a nice twist to share a bit about what makes our company so great, since we’re more than just our products.

Dannon & Danone
Dannon Logo
Nutricia is a sister to a much larger company that you’ve probably heard of – Dannon! We also have sister companies in Evian and Stonyfield. These companies are the North American branches of our parent company, Group Danone. Danone is based in Paris, and this family of companies presents a great partnership for sharing medical research and working together to provide some of the best products available. This also means we and our customers benefit from the great initiatives that come out of Danone.

International

Neocate LogoDid you know that Nutricia is worldwide? We actually have Nutricia branches located around the world, not just in the United States. Each international branch of Nutricia offers a slightly different mix of products from our global portfolio. Neocate, however, is offered by almost all branches, since it has been so helpful to so many families worldwide.

Research

Chemist Writing FormulasOne of the greatest things about Nutricia is our long and continued commitment to research. Since the 1960s, we’ve supported hundreds of publications on research into our products and many medical conditions. This means that we get to work with lots of researchers, many of whom are leaders in their field. This research has contributed to improving the way medicine is practiced, including the diagnosis and treatment of multiple conditions. We’re pretty proud of that!

Taking this one step further, we offer many opportunities for health care professionals to learn about cutting edge science from top researchers. We do this by offering free webinars, presentations, and by supporting medical conferences, making it easier for the folks who treat patients to stay up-to-date on current medical knowledge.

On top of this, we now have a team of researchers based here in the United States. They are working on current studies for our products. This team, along with our international research teams, demonstrates our dedication to furthering medical research.

Specialized

One of the best things about Nutricia shows up as part of our mission: “Improving lives through specialized nutrition solutions.”  We are certainly not a one-size-fits-all kind of company. In fact, most people will probably never hear about Nutricia. Our products are specialized, meaning they are designed for specific conditions and disorders, most of them rare. This means we can focus our efforts and resources on providing the best products possible for those conditions, and for our customers! We also provide specialized customer service, which includes having dedicated Nutrition Specialists to answer customer questions.

Employee Support

Finally, it wouldn’t be fair to tell you how great our company is without letting you know how much support they provide to us, the employees. By being a part of Danone, we get to take part in training that makes us better able to support our customers, as well as to work better with each other. Nutricia also supports our education, such as going to conferences to stay on top of current research, as well as taking classes to improve our skills and knowledge.

Do you have a question about Nutricia, and what makes us so special?

When does Neocate actually expire?

Posted 12.30.11 | Nutrition Specialist

Q:I’ve found a few cans of Neocate at the back of my pantry that I’d forgotten about. The expiration date was last week, but they’re still okay to use, right?

A:We get questions about using Neocate past the expiration date often. Here’s what you need to know:

The expiration date

For our powdered Neocate products you can find the expiration date on the bottom of the can. If you’re looking at a drink box of E028 Splash, you can find the expiration date on the top of the drink box. The expiration dates on the Neocate family of products follow the standard North American format, which is Month/Day/Year. Technically, the product is good to use through midnight on that date.

How are your expiration dates determined?

The expiration date on any product, not just Nutricia products, is based on several factors. One is the integrity of the packaging materials. We want to ensure they will keep the contents safe until the expiration date. Another is the stability of the ingredients. For instance, some fats go rancid faster than others – think fresh walnuts versus vegetable oil for cooking. We want to ensure that the product is fresh for the full shelf-life.

A related factor is to ensure that the nutrients in the product are going to be present at the levels on the label. Nutrients, particularly vitamins, have a tendency to naturally break down over time, some faster than others. Especially since many children use Neocate to meet their full nutritional needs, it’s very important that the right amount of each nutrient is in the product. We conduct extensive testing under a number of conditions to ensure that the nutrients hold up until the expiration date.

What we recommend

The ultimate intent of an expiration date is to keep our customers safe and ensure they receive the nutrients that they need. We cannot recommend using any of our products past the expiration date. Period!

If you have further questions about this, we’d recommend discussing this with your health care team. It may help to provide them with the above information to get their informed opinion.
