Neocate Product Series – Neocate Junior

Posted 4.17.12 | Nutrition Specialist

Today, as part of our Neocate Product Series, we will take a look at Neocate Junior.  As you saw in our previous product series posts, we will be taking a look at the product description, preparation instructions and the nutrient/ingredient profile.

Neocate Junior is a nutritionally complete, powdered amino acid-based medical food for children over the age of one. It is for the dietary management of cow milk allergy, multiple food allergies (MFA) and food-allergy-associated conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), short bowel syndrome (SBS), malabsorption and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Additionally, to meet your child's taste preferences, Neocate Junior comes in three flavors: tropical, chocolate and unflavored.

How to prepare Neocate Junior

How much Neocate Junior you give your child should be determined by a healthcare professional and is dependent on the age, body weight, activity level and medical condition of the patient.

For oral feedings:

  1. Measure the required amount of warm or cool water into a container.
  2. Add the prescribed amount of Neocate Junior to the water.
  3. Cover and shake until the powder has dissolved.

Neocate Junior is best served chilled.  Once prepared, the formula should be stored in a refrigerator and kept no longer than 24 hours from the time of preparation. Shake or stir Neocate Junior immediately before use.

The recommended dilution is 30 kcal/fl oz (or 30 calories per fluid ounce). This can be achieved by mixing the following amounts of powder and water.  The scoop provided weighs 8.2 g.

What does 100 kcal mean? How many scoops is that for Neocate Junior?

  • 2016-04-19 | Nutrition Specialist

Great question Susan! 100 kcal is just a technical way to say 100 calories. For Neocate Junior products you can’t get exactly 100 calories using full scoops: Most of them provide 100 calories in around 2 and a half scoops.

Is the scoop provided equivalent to a tablespoon if I have lost it?

  • 2016-07-26 | Nutrition Specialist

    Elisa,
Good question! No, on average a Tablespoon probably provides less powder than the scoop that’s provided with Neocate Junior. Do you have another unopened can that you could open to use the scoop? If not, we recommend that you ask your healthcare team for help. We can provide them with average amounts of powder in various household measuring cups and spoons, and they could come up with a temporary recipe based on your needs. If they don’t have those values handy, they can give us a call!
      Best of luck,
    Rob

How many servings per can for the neocate Junior (vanilla) 14oz can?

  • 2016-11-24 | Nutrition Specialist

    Hi Claudia,
That depends on what a “serving” is, and your healthcare team is the best to answer that. When prepared as directed, each can of Neocate Junior with Prebiotics, Vanilla makes about 61 fluid ounces. So for example there are close to eight 8 fl oz servings per can. Hope this helps!
      Best,
    Rob
