Neocate Junior-Only Recipes

Posted 4.8.14 | Rob McCandlish, RDN

When you or a loved one is on a severely restricted diet due to food allergies or related conditions, the diet can become very boring, very fast. We offer multiple flavors of Neocate products, but even those can be routine sometimes. We talk to families and parents every day for whom Neocate is the sole or primary source of nutrition for a loved one, and many of you are looking for more options!

Today, we're going to share a few recipes that combine two Neocate Junior products to change things up. We hope that these can help break the routine if you're stuck in a flavor rut!

Where did these recipe ideas come from?

I went back to school to study nutrition and dietetics and - surprise - I didn't love every class I took. Most were great, a few were good, and some were excellent. But by far my favorite classes had to do with cooking and recipes. Put me in the kitchen with ingredients, a concept, and some time to experiment and I am one happy guy!

I'm lucky to work in a role where I get to develop recipes, which I love. It can be a fun challenge tinkering with recipes that exclude major allergens. It's like a science experiment! Families who manage food allergies and related conditions know: this can be a challenge! Substitutes for dairy, eggs, or wheat don't always work well in recipes.

So what to do when even those recipes aren't an option and you're sticking to the Neocate family of products? It's time to mix things up and get a little crazy! For each of these recipes I started with a basic 1:1 ratio of two Neocate Junior products. Each recipe uses our newest strawberry flavor. (If you have a few cans on hand, now might be the time to start getting excited!)

As with any recipe though, the first try usually isn't the best, and I never settle when it comes to recipes. Read on for the ultimate, optimal ratios, at least according to our taste buds. And of course, any good recipe has to have a fun name, right?

Who are these recipes for?

These recipes are great for anyone who drinks Neocate Junior products. In particular though, they're perfect for folks who have to follow a strict amino acid-based diet. We're talking about conditions like eosinophilic esophagitis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, multiple food allergies, Crohn's disease, and related conditions. These recipes combine Neocate Junior flavors for exciting new combinations, so are great for a change of pace.

Neocate Junior “Strawberries & Crème”

We like this recipe for the light strawberry taste combined with the pleasant background vanilla flavor. Don't let the name fool you: there's no cream in this dream of a recipe! We tried different ratios of strawberry-to-vanilla, and found that in a 1:1 ratio the vanilla was overpowering. We finally settled on a 2:1 ratio. However, if the ratio below doesn’t seem quite right to you, feel free to experiment to find a best-fit for your taste buds!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Add water to a container, preferably one with a lid.
  2. Add the scoops of both Neocate Junior powders. (Or add the powders first, if you prefer, then water)
  3. If the container can be sealed: Cover and shake until the powder has dissolved, about 15 to 20 seconds. If the container is open, stir vigorously with a fork or whisk until the powder has dissolved, about 30 seconds.
  4. Enjoy!

Neocate Junior “Chocolate-covered Strawberries”

Who doesn’t love chocolate-covered strawberries? Anyone with a milk, strawberry, and/or chocolate allergy, that's who! I think this is the next best thing. We tried different ratios and felt the below ratio worked best for us. (A 5:2 ratio of Strawberry:Chocolate was a close second!) If the ratio below doesn’t seem quite right to you, feel free to experiment to find a best-fit for your taste buds!

  4. Enjoy!
But wait, there's more!

As always, don’t forget about the other resources we have for elimination diets that you can use when adding foods gradually back in to your diet to compliment amino acid-based nutrition. For example, the recipe guides and cookbooks we offer bring together ideas from many parents and families who manage allergies like experts. They’ve come up with great dishes that have helped many other families in their allergy journey!

If you've tried one or both of these recipes, what did you think?
